Protests & Marches

On Saturday, April 24, simultaneous demonstrations and rallies are being planned in 104 cities, including most major cities in the country. The Cleveland demonstration will take place at noon on Public Square. Specific issues will be raised on different days. Plans are for local demonstrations in support of the ERA and abortion rights on Tuesday, April 27, and in support of lesbian and gay rights on Wednesday, April 28. On April 29 there will be a national day of student protest stressing the theme, "Money for education, not for war". On Friday, April 30, seniors and disabled groups will picket federal buildings to protest proposed cuts in Medicald, Medicare and health services.

The All-Peoples Congress is organizing a March on Washington on Saturday, May 1, 1982 to demand jobs and protest the Reagan programs of war, cutbacks and racism. A National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights I will be held on Sunday, May 2, 1981. The demands of the march are to stop the Family Protection Act, pass. the National Gay Rights Bill, stop the discriminatory immigration policy against lesbians and gays, and pass

Health & Reproductive Rights

The Cleveland Infant Formula Action Coalition (INFACT) is stepping up its activities to better inform the public of the boycott against the Nestle Corporation and its subsidiary, Stouffer's. Actions will include picketing, media exposure and the distribution and sale of informational pieces, buttons and bumper stickers. The Pro-Choice Action Committee is an activist organization dedicated to fighting for full reproductive rights for all women. We support legal, safe and funded abortions for all women regardless of age or marital status. We oppose sterilization abuse and population control schemes. Reproductive rights include the right to safe and effective methods of contraception, and the right to decent low cost quality child care. The Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cloveland is looking for physicians, nurse-practitioners, physicians' assistants, or midwives to volunteer one evening (3 hours) per week to assist us in serving our female patient population. Professionals are needed to provide physical exams for women wishing to obtain birth control methods, pregnancy testing, or testing and treatment of vaginal infections and sexually transmitted diseases. Cleveland Women Working will kick off National Secretaries Week on Monday, April 19, with a "Raises and Roses Celebration" from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Cleveland City Club. Gloria Steinem, one of the country's best known leaders of the women's movement, will be the special guest at this cocktail party to benefit CWW. A national study is currently under way to provide information to combat heart disease and answer the question, "Will lowering cholesterol reduce the risk of heart attack?" The study will involve 1,000 participants nationwide. Four regional clinical centers are accepting men and women volunteers. The study needs persons who are ages 29-64, have had only one heart attack in their lifetime, suffered within the past five years, have not had a stroke, do not have diabetes and have not had heart surgery. The study works closely with each person's private doctor.

We are interested in forming a network of faculty who teach feminist courses relating to health care issues, and in fostering development of such courses at the undergraduate level. We are assessing the possibility of sponsoring a summer workshop. On April 18, hundreds of pro-choice Ohioans will gather in Worthington, Ohio (outside Columbus) for the first state pro-choice NARAL/Ohio convention. Mary Dent Crisp, feminist and former co-chair of the Republican National Committee, will deliver the keynote speech, and will also appear with State Sen. Michael Schwarzwalder at fundraiser the evening before the convention. There will also be a series of workshops, including sessions on ''Getting Out Pro-Choice Vote," "Campaign Phone Banks,' and many more. A pro-choice celebrity souvenir raffle is also planned with items from Gary Trudeau, Sally Struthers, Julia Child, inda Lavin, and more.

Finally, a program book will be published to mark this first state-wide pro-choice event. Groups, individuals, and businesses are urged to demonstrate their support for pro-choice by placing an ad in the book. Registration deadline is April 9. On April 19, the Pro-Choice Action Committee will hold a meeting on les. bian organizing for reproductive rights. The Cleveland Pro-Choice Action Committee is proposing that Saturday, April 24, be a day when all the pro-choice and women's organizations in the state have a concerted activity focussing on our opposition to the Human Life Amendment. This date is one week after the statewide NARAL conference and the Reproductive Rights National Network Ohio student conference. These conferences could help publicize and organize events. A good target would be Ashbrook's offices since he has set them up in almost all cities in the state. By doing something to demonstrate our opposition to the HLA and on the same day, we can achieve the most in coordinated and concentrated media exposure. A Pro-Choice Action Committee Car Caravan will take place April 24 to leaflet and petition against the Hatch and Human Life Amendments. We hope to be joined with other pro-choice and women's organizations in the city and across the state. Call 371-7648 for more information.

The annual meeting of the Cleveland Abortion Rights Action League will be held on Thursday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of the Covenant, 11205 Euclid Avenue. Carol Wall, Executive Director of Summit County Planned Parenthood and board member of NARAL national, is the scheduled speaker, and will discuss the topic "Politicians and Abortion". The public is invited to attend the meeting; which will be chaired by Barbara Pence, CARAL President. Information will be given on the current "informed consent" legislation pending in the state legislature, as well as the Hatch Amendment in Congress, which would give Congress and the states the power to restrict abortion. CARAL Board members will also be introduced, including the newly-elected members. Protected parking is available at both the front and the rear of the church, and refreshments will be served.

The regional meeting of the Reproductive Rights National Network will take place in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 8. Topics include organizing against the Hatch and Human Ufe Amendments, sterilization abuse, media work, lesbian organizing, third world women and reproductive rights, media work and more. On May 17, the Pro-Choice Action Committee Educational on Teenagers and Reproductive Rights will focus not only on teenage sexuality but also on the new repressive laws against young people. The meeting is at Barbara Winslow's, 3253 East Fairfax Road, Cleveland Heights (off Lee, between Cedar and Fairmount). The speaker will be from Heights High School.
